Buying Environmentally Friendly Wood Furniture

25th Oct 2016

Nothing lasts forever. That’s particularly true when it comes to our natural resources. At Aqua Teak, environmental responsibility is important to us, which is why we only buy wood that comes from sustainably harvested plantations to use for our teak shower benches. We’re willing to bet you feel the same way.

If it’s important to you to buy furniture that’s environmentally friendly, enjoy these tips on what to look for.

  • First, make sure to ask your supplier if the wood is sustainable. While humans have used wood as a building material for furniture longer than any other material, it’s not a great option if the end result causes deforestation.
  • The durability of the wood is another important aspect when it comes to green furniture. Some species of wood, like teak, are very dense and are highly durable. As a result, there’s less of a need for repairs and refurbishment. Durable wood can be more expensive, but it’s usually a wise long-term investment.
  • Wood tends to last for an extremely long time. As a result, many reclaimers and architects are using reclaimed wood from old houses, barns, and furniture to repurpose it into something new. Reclaimed wood has also been used from logs that have sank to the bottom of rivers or that have collapsed in forests.
  • For a long time, bamboo was used as a material for building furniture, insulation, and flooring. It’s not a wood, but bamboo is a form of grass that grows very quickly and is extremely easy to maintain. Bamboo is a great alternative to wood for furniture and a host of other needs.
